Go Lean, Clean and Green

The event is a global event organized by Suzuki Corporation, from July to September, each year. The campaign has been running since 2010. Since then, this campaign was conducted in 20 countries at 31 locations.

This is the second year of collaboration between Save the Beach Maldives and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC ) to host Clean-up the World Campaign in the Maldives. The cleanup event was held as a “Clean-up Challenge” between groups of participants on the 27th of August 2016.

The teams were free to collect litter from around the island. The waste was to be segregated between three categories (general trash, plastics and metals) and brought back to the site before the time was up. Plastics include HDPE/PEHD, PET(E), PVC waste. (Hard plastics, plastic bottles, containers etc), Metals include Aluminium cans, Steel fish cans and Tin. General Waste includes a numerous amount of waste such as, Supari packets, Juice/Milk packets, Plastic bags, cigarette butts, thin film plastics (cling wrap/cellophane, etc), packaging plastics, footwear, clothing, diapers, other random items, parts of furniture, other composite items, etc.

384.65 kilograms of waste was collected all together. The winning team collected 77.85 kilograms of waste.

This year, we included a quiz for the teams to solve. The participants were excited to have another chance to win a bonus prize! The quiz included questions about waste, pollution and coral reefs. It was a chance to learn something new.
