Re-launching Save the Beach – Villingili

Posted in: Organization

Since 2008, members of Save the Beach – Villingili have lobbied with the government authorities to sustainably clean the beaches of Villingili. Save the Beach has finally managed to get the council onboard with the importance of conserving and maintaining the only natural beach left for use by more than 33% of Maldivians. Save the Beach, originally formed in 2008 by a group of enthusiastic youngsters, was relaunched this June 2012 to carry on the project to Beautify and Conserve Villingili.

Having learned from the Male’ experience of placing dustbins around the island, and from Villingili’s own experience, Save the Beach realises the key to a successful project would be to have everyone using the beach on the same page. Hence, creating awareness among the community of Villingili and Male’ will be one of the main focus areas for the project. Awareness programs will be designed especially for the youth, children and adults separately  depending on the target group. As a key strategy a lot of activities will be carried out together with the school of Villingili to ensure the next generation of adults are well informed as well to make sure their parents and family units get involved.

The project aims to give the beaches of Villingili a facelift – placing signboards, lights , dustbins, and even a fish cleaning area for beach users. The aim is to let people know that Villingili’s beaches are maintained and cared for. Our intention is not to reduce the amount of people using the beach, but to maintain and clean the beach while at the same time increase the number of beach goers. Save the beach will host several events and activities throughout the year, the idea being to involve as many people in different activities on the beach, teaching them the importance of conserving the little left of the only natural beach for the residents of Male’.

Save the Beach is dedicated to conserving the beach and reef and has plans for the long haul. Please visit our projects page for more information on the project.
