beautification & CONSERVATION OF VILLImale’ island

Started in 2012 the project aims to conserve the natural beauty of the beaches and reefs around Villimale’ Island (North Male’ atoll).

In those years the beaches were highly degraded due to the incredible amount of plastic and garbage daily washed and thrown in the area. We could witness kids swimming and playing with garbage and families having picnics surrounded by trash. That is when we decided to take action and organise the first clean-up and litter audit event in Villimale’.

Through the years the program included many clean-ups and litter audits with different partners and collaborations (such as MBRC for the Ocean, Parley, and other organizations).

But also:

  • Beach maintenance: which included the placing of 40 dustbins on the beaches around the Island and their daily attendance. To increase awareness and to incentivise the use of the dustbins we placed signboards on the beaches.

  • Awareness Programs: targeted at different ages and groups, including most of the primary and secondary schools in Male’. We continue to carry out structured programs with Villimale’s school students.

  • Developing television infomercials and PSAs: to raise awareness of environmental impacts created through human actions and aiming to raise individual levels of responsibility, with a special focus on marine litter and waste.

  • Safety on the beach: placing buoys along with safety ropes on the reef for snorkelers, and signboards to indicate high current areas. Training for lifeguards in collaboration with the Maldives Police Services and Coast Guard and First Aid Courses.

  • Strengthening the embankment: replanting beach trees such as Magoo and Palm trees to maintain the embankment of the surviving beaches.

  • Placed semi-permanent barbecue stands in South West Beach, where barbecue fires will not affect trees on the beach. Signboards have also been placed advising beach users not to light fires under the trees.

  • Harbour and jetty maintenance: cleaning out floating garbage in the harbor and jetty.

  • Reef Maintenance: cleanups of the reef and of floating garbage around Villimale’ assisted greatly in reducing the amount of garbage washed on the beaches. since 2014, we also started monitoring and researching our reef ecosystem with the assistance and collaboration of the Marine Research Centre and the Ministry of Environment. In the same year Reef Check monitoring protocol and coral restoration project started as well!

The project was originally planned for a 10-year period, and the activities and targets were planned for the first 3 years.

Since then, the project has continued successfully and many signs of progress have been done in keeping the beaches and reefs of Villimale’ clean!

This result was possible also thanks to the increased level of awareness within the Villimale’ community and the community of Maldives as a whole, the project will now be extended for another 10 years.

Expenses and materials for the project are obtained through sponsorship or donors. Accounting associated with the maintenance of the beach and reef is transparent and shared with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment every year.
